HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
by Emily Dickinson
Playing with the idea of hidden messages I used a blue paint marker nearly identical to the blue of the box to write and draw in details. They only appear in the correct light, adding a bit of a game element to the piece. The Parrots are symbols of joy and devotion. In Chinese culture they promote auspicious Chi, in the Catholic tradition symbolise the Virgin Birth and bear witness to the Fall of Man. Painted over a bed made up of salt crystals and found (non-parrot) feathers. The other side of the interior shows a tree in gold, encircling coins. Luck, power and circular nature of each coin. European, American and British money used.
