Created as a self-portrait for the Mortal and Strong 'Scars of Gold' exhibition, 2025. I used a reference image of myself in profile to create a digital drawing for laser engraving. The profile image is to emphasis looking forward in life. Working on two colours of leather and sewing them together by hand, I then embossed the leather with a quote from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam reading
"The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it."
The quote reflects the feeling that a late diagnosis has effectively erased time from a life. The two ECG readings are from pre and post medical treatment. The title is a reference to the abnormal P-waves that characterise my arrythmia. It's an artwork of hope, reflecting my joy at diagnosis and treatment.
